Sound Design with QLab

Sound Design for production begins with the text and the directorial analysis. We then look for Needs and Opportunities. Needs are comprised of sounds necessary for the production, and opportunities are areas within the play that offer creative availability for added sound effects and music.

First Year: Sound Design

The Foreigner

First Year Sound Project

In the first year, I learned to utilize the digital sound program Qlab, which allowed me to upload sound effects and files to an interface that organizes production sound Ques. This digital platform was life-changing, as it empowered me to control the levels, accuracy, and timing of sounds.

In the Qlab elective, I also learned how to utilize Audacity, in order to layer and manipulate sounds prior to moving it onto the Qlab interface. This gave me more control over the specificity of sound.

Second Year Masters of Theatre Studies/Sound Design Musical Theatre: Urinetown

After being pretty well accustomed to using Qlab as the digital platform to organize and play my sound files I felt armed to create sound using Audacity to layer effects as well. In-person, we trained our ears while adjusting sound levels in the MoTS theatre..

This version of Hamlet is set in Dublin during the Troubles, and the music of the times often help further the story. The Soundtrack features classical Irish music as a nod to a culture’s foundation, as well as contemporary Irish music exploring the political issues Ireland has struggled with.
