Masters of Theatre Studies

Lighting Design

Each year in Mots I was able to expand my knowledge and skill base, with a growing passion for discovering color, angle and texture on stage through light.

Second Year

It all begins with an opportunity to learn on campus, in person, and with instructors that are eager and available. The second year we were able to get off the computer and into the theatre to rig lights, adjust angels and add color and texture. We learned the art of the Color Key and designed beat sheets as a road map for our lighting design. This was life-changing for me, and allowed me to further organize my creative ideas.

Third Year

In this third year, I chose to focus on Lighting for my applied Design Project, because lighting feels like the element of production I most need to grow. Although we don’t have a lighting system, or real theatre at my current school, I purchased a simple system that would allow me to dip my toe into this art form, and experiment in my own space. This was a major endeavor, but it was well worth it. Light determines so much of the artistic mood of a piece, and the audience appreciated the effect on the performances.

I purchased 6 lighting trees, 4 Led lights, and used 8 found par lights. I had to run two boards to get these all working for one production.

It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.
